Welcome to Year 1
The adults in Year 1 are:

What an exciting year we have ahead of us. Keep checking back to see what the children of Birch class have been up to.
-Forest school will take place on Fridays so please ensure you child has a pair of wellies, a long sleeved top or jacket and a full length pair of trousers or leggings every Friday.
-PE is on Tuesdays, children will need a full kit to participate.
-Homework is given out every Wednesday to be returned either weekly (maths and phonics) or two weekly (topic) on a Monday.
-Reading is so important especially at this crucial time in year 1. Please ensure that your child is reading at least three times a week but ideally they should be reading or be read to every day. Children will earn stickers every time they read to move up the reading rainbow so please sign in the reading record each time.
The Three Little Pigs
We learnt the story then innovated the text by changing the materials the houses were built from. We then wrote out our new stories. We tried building houses in the forest with natural materials, using different foods such as spaghetti and marshmallows and with junk modelling items found in the classroom. The Big Bad Wolf then came and tried to blow them down.
How to make a Jam Sandwich.
We have been learning how to write instructions. We first used a set of instructions to make our own jam sandwich. We then learnt all about the features of instructions and wrote out some of our own. In the end we wrote out a set of instructions making a sandwich for someone else. We had sandwiches for the queen containing salmon and cucumber, tuna and ketchup sandwiches for a shark and a meat and leaves sandwich for a dinosaur.
In maths we have been learning all about number facts to 5 and 10. We have used a range of resources to build numbers and tried out lots of ways to represent these facts. Here are some of our examples.
In science we have been learning all about humans and animals. We first looked at human body parts and created our own labelled human bodies. We then complete lots of investigations into our senses and how we can use them. To finish off this term we have been naming, classifying and investigating animals.
We have been learning all about real life superhero Florence Nightingale. We found out why she is so significant in history and what impact she had on hospitals and nursing today. We wrote out why we thought she deserved to be a real life superhero.
We have been learning how to keep ourselves safe online. We used the iPads to search for a website and then wrote down some of the information we found out from the website.
We made our own superhero skylines using chalk. We drew round building and used chalk to create a colourful skyline like you may find in a comic books.
Design and Technology
We designed, created and then evaluated our own superhero masks. We had to make sure they had a logo, holes of the eyes and were brightly coloured.
We have been really busy in the forest this term. We started by learning all about how to keep ourselves safe in the forest and how to play some forest games.
We then explored the forest by measuring leaves, creating masks, planting bulbs, using our senses and classifying natural materials.
