Year 1

Practical learning, phonics and Peartree values

Leaving Reception behind and moving into Year 1 can feel like a big step for both children and their parents/carers. At Peartree we try to make this transition as easy as possible for everyone. We often find our children return from their summer break looking taller and wiser and ready for a challenge.

There will be an emphasis on practical, hands-on learning. There will also be a relentless focus on securing phonics skills. Of course, Peartree values will be threaded throughout the Year 1 curriculum. Home and school work together to help our children learn how to live by these values.

A Year 1 learner's day is little more formal than it was in Reception. They may have to sit at a table for longer than they are used to, but they will still be learning in a variety of ways and through play. They will be exploring and discovering. We make use of our extensive outdoor areas including the court yards, playgrounds and wood.
